Episode 55: Gone, Baby, Gone

Waking up in a forest, Parthia makes Russ a curious offer
one of the last things Russ remembered was Hastings assuring him that the Parthia Group never wanted him dead, Russ reminded him how he had been hunted, all because of the memo, my apologies for that, Arnold can be a bit over zealous at times, Hastings explained how the New World Historians worked with Parthia, but each group pursued their own agendas, it is unfortunate, but under the circumstances they can not all ways control the Historians ... we see a shot of the Contrarian being shot ... I promise that none of us wanted this to happen, at that point, Hastings promise meant nothing to Russ, nothing about the baby files from Hastings from his house, no mention of the Serpent Mound, had they revealed the truth about their agenda by omission, its very complicated Russell but we are trying to help humanity, you must believe me, this much we have in common with you, we have seen it, we have been watching you for some time, you seem to have a gift for staying alive ... Russ asked Hastings about what he had found on their computer network, but he would not explain Project Continuum, not directly anyway ... it was all so surreal, his memory was foggy and fragmented, the whole compound had been swept clean, but they did leave one thing behind, minus any incriminating evidence, his backpack, still they gave him one new clue for his collection, a map with a post it stuck to it saying Turn Off the EMP J.H. ... when Russ saw that map he finally realised why, the Parthia Group was trying to recruit him

Episode 54: Parthia

Under interrogation, Russ makes some discoveries of his own
up till now Russ journey had been full of surprises, some good some bad, but the biggest surprise of all, was that he was not dead, where is it Mr Shoemaker, the Parthia Group was apparently keeping him alive for a reason, one that initially made no sense at all, he told them that the memo was in his backpack, but they had all ready taken that, when they went thru his back pack, they read his journal, that's how they found the video, it was the first time Russ would see The Fall with his own eyes, between that tape and all the other evidence that he had collected, who are you working for, Russ told them that he was not working for anyone, it was just his nature to want answers, we are only going to ask you one more time, where is the control site, they were testing him, seeing how much he really knew, but he had no knowledge of any control site, he did not know what they were referring to, until he remembered what Luther had said back in New Eden, why do you leave a working satellite up there, the EMP satellite system the Historians had told him about, if it was all true, that system could still be on, and they wanted to know how to turn it off, all this time Russ had assumed that the Parthia Group, and all those powerful people, were responsible for The Fall, or at the very least knew why it had happened, but the truth was, they did not have many more pieces of the puzzle, than Russ did, someone enters the room, which is why they tried a different approach, Russell Shoemaker it is a pleasure to finally meet you, I'm Jack Hastings

Episode 53: Who Are You

Caught inside Parthia, Russ tries to lie his way to freedom
Russ's beliefs in himself were put to the test in three simple words, Who are You, suddenly survival meant doing something else he was never good at, lying, and lying with conviction, so he rolled the dice, showed his new ID, and told them that he was Ronald Powerl the Third, I killed Russell Shoemaker, as Russ explained how he was given this address, and had come to collect his reward, it felt like just another day at the office for the guards, like The Fall never even happened, but before Russ could received payment and leave, they wanted to hear how shoemker had died, it was painful digging up those memories, but he had no choice, he told them a story how Shoemaker went out in a blaze of glory, he told them that he had salvaged Shoemakers back pack, and hoped that what they were looking for was still in there, all right pal how do you want it, yeah call me greedy fellas but I want it all now, for a moment Russ had fooled the guards, but not the people in charge, the gun was again raised at Russ, turned out that he was being watched, someone had figured out who he really was, your in it deep now Shoemaker

Episode 52: Electricity

Inside Parthia HQ, Russ access their databases...
Russ had never really been a fan of classical music, that was always his fathers music, but when he heard it that day on a remote airfield, it was the sweetest sound, more than just the music, it was technology, powered by electrical energy, using AC, something Russ did not think he would ever see again ... how was it possible, the EMP should of knocked out everything, Russ remembered something he had learned in Nashville, Travis had explained, how certain materials could counter out the effects of an electro magnetic pulse, how the thick metal casing around the security camera, had acted as a shield, creating what he called a Faraday cage, apparently some construction materials naturally do this, like those found in elevators and tunnels, but this building had been hardened to protect it from an EMP, with layers of conducting material, designed to absorb the electrical charge, all of this was not by chance, which meant, whoever was here was well prepared for The Fall, Russ made his move when the guard took a break, Russ got onto the computers and started searching the database, the feel of the keyboard and the warm glow of the monitor, Russ had not realised how he had missed the tactile experience of using a computer, but the real rush was searching the confidential information at his finger tips ... pulling back the veil on the Parthia Group, all of the pieces of the puzzle had led Russ to this moment, he could not help wondering, it he was really ready to face the truth, Russ did not know it but he was one click away from the most important discovery of all, the whole place went into lock down, guards with guns greeted Russ at the door

Karina’s Capsule: Afterworld

If you think about most of the videos that qualify as “YouTube hits,” the majority of them have certain keywords in common: “gimmick”, “funny”, “DIY”. But none of those keywords apply to Afterworld, which is currently the number three Most Subscribed To director’s channel on YouTube. Considering that slots 1 and 2 are occupied by the BBC and CBS, the computer-animated apocalypse series is almost certainly the most watched narrative drama being produced for the web right now.

So why is Afterworld so successful? The fact that there’s nothing else like it currently on the web has to be part of the appeal. The stilted, dissolve-heavy animation style (produced through a combination of Poser and AfterEffects) recalls early-’90s Japanimation-meets-Second Life. The story (which follows Russell, a 30-ish white guy who wakes up one morning to discover that 99 percent of the Earth’s population has been wiped off the planet) seems to be original––it’s not in any way spoofy or even self-reflexive.

The storytelling style breaks the old “show don’t tell” film school rule pretty drastically––the soundtrack is virtually wall-to-wall narration, and as the animation style precludes the characters from engaging in any serious movement or action, most episodes play like spoken word with illustrations.

There are eight episodes of Afterworld currently on YouTube, and if you watch them back-to-back, what’s most striking is the series’ complete lack of humor. This is not X Files-style sci-fi, with banter and quips; nor does it come from the Buffy school of action-packed, supernatural mythology delivered with a major wink. Russell spends at least half the series ruminating in total sincerity on big issues like evil and loneliness (typical revelation: “The real villain is nothing more than human nature!”), whilst staring mournfully off to the left of the screen, his glasses catching the reflection of campfire or raindrops.

In willful defiance of the tropes laid out both by contemporary genres and pretty much every other video on YouTube, the creators of Afterworld have dared to make a web series seemingly devoid of irony. In this cultural climate, that kind of gamble is incredibly brave.

Afterworld is featured on and funded by Bud.tv, Anheuser Busch’s not exactly thriving online advertainment video portal, where it stands out amidst more conventional, fratboy-tastic content, such as the campy makeover show, What Girls Want.

Super-straight faced sci-fi doesn’t immediately come to mind as a natural fit for such a party-centric brand, but the counter-programming has worked like gangbusters–the series’ YouTube success is the one bright spot on Bud.Tv’s otherwise dismal track record.

According to Afterworld’s website, the series is intended as “a fully-immersive, interactive science fiction series…A new kind of computer-animated entertainment that goes deeper, blending video games, graphic novels and anime into one dynamic experience.”

I’m not sure what that means; are users already helping to determine the course of the narrative, or will their input be required at some point in the future? The current website doesn’t offer any additional information, and I was unable to view the Afterworld page at its corporate home (Bud.Tv’s age check system did not accept my assurances that I am over 21). In a way, it doesn’t matter––the people have already spoken through their subscriptions. Whether or not other content creators will listen remains to be seen.

Venturing further from the hotel -- also desperately in need of supplies that he starts hoarding -- Russ encounters a streetwise female horse cop, Delondre, who tells him there are dozens more, maybe hundreds more, survivors throughout the city.

Episode 50: R.I.P.

Russ and Bryson stand off against the bounty hunter Russ learnt a lot about survival recently, more importantly, Russ learnt a lot about himself, the hunter aimed his rifle at the door and said come out and live or stay in there and burn ... Russ realised that if he ever wanted to make it home he had to accept the painful truth, something that he has been told before, and something he has been stubborn to believe, Bryson opens a door in the floor, and escapes, the world had changed but human nature had not, it was a bitter pill to swallow, Bryson showed Russ that it was not wrong to assume the worst about people, it was just survival, you had to be prepared for anything, they got out and flanked the hunter, Russ realised that he was in a world without justice, Bryson thru his knife at the hunter, the hunter turned around and started shooting, Russ took him out, Russ realised Kill or be Killed, Russ wondered what his life was worth to the hunter, Russ told himself that killing the hunter was just self defense, Russ decided that he needed to die, right here, if someone came to check out the fire they would find a dead body, burned beyond recognition, and Russ's ID, hopefully they would believe it was him, looking back on it, Russ did die that day, the scared Ad Exec from Seattle was laid to rest, in its place was a survivor, a man capable of living off the land, capable of doing what ever it took to stay alive, it was like Bryson said before the went their separate ways, survival is just making the best of whatever life gives you, life had given Russ and Bryson a chance to start over, a clean slate, so Russ put his past behind him, and focussed on his future, and took on the identity of his hunter

Episode 49: Wanted

you don't really know a man until you have walked in his shoes, where they came from and where they are going ... Russ had been caught by a bounty hunter, all that competition and you jump into my snare, must be my lucky day, his captor said he would not kill Russ yet, too much work to move a stiff thru this terrain, he was also curious what Russ was wanted for ... Russ told him his whole story, his captor did not know about The Fall, he had been living alone in the woods for about five years, said he had noticed things like, less campers and no planes in the sky, but for the most part he did not give the outside world much thought, russ was tied by the hands, Bryson had said that Russ had set him free, if technology had been wiped out then his criminal record had gone as well ... so he returned the favour on one condition, that Russ take a crash course on survival, starting immediately, consider this my debt to society, according to Bryson there were three basic rules of survival, you have to be able to feed yourself, keep warm, and play doctor ... in just a couple of days, Russ learnt to trap, to catch the easy game like bugs and rodents, he showed Russ which plants were edible, and which ones would kill him, he showed Russ all the things that would be needed to start a fire and build shelter in any conditions ... and he ran Russ thru basic medical skills, using only what you would find in nature, but the most important thing that Bryson taught Russ was that guns were kind of like technology, you become dependent on them to solve all your problems but one day when all your bullets are gone, you will be a sitting duck, follow your instincts and you might just make it out alive .... a projectile comes thru the window and sets alight the cabin that they are in

Episode 48: The Hunter

Russ has to teach himself how to live out in the wild
it is said that deep down inside we are all still animals, survival is a biological imperative, which kicks in when facing death, Russ had run out of food, everyday he slept in longer, conserving his energy, Russ saw a news story before The Fall, of a father and son who got lost, they lived of berries and pine nuts, nature is a bounty if you know what to eat, but if you are ignorant like he was you had better know how to hunt, he was fast learning that trapping and spear fishing were not as easy as they looked in the movies, after many failures, he finally reached a breaking point, it was not something that he thought thru, if grabbed his knife and began to chase a deer, but then he was shot, in a manner of minutes he had gone from the hunter to the hunted, the pain was spreading from his shoulder to his back, he wanted to just pass out so the nightmare would end, but unfortunately it was only just beginning, Russ was caught in a net

Episode 47: Off the Grid

With Ellen's death haunting him, Russ hides out in the Ozarks
sometimes trouble finds you no matter how hard you try to avoid it, in fact the harder you try to avoid it the worse things get, Russ had never had much luck with bikes and with most roads blocked they were becoming impradctical, Russ had heard of people going off the grid before The Fall ... with Ellens murder still haunting him, he finally understood the need to just disappear, forced to go cold turnkey in a world were technology was an addiction, emails, cell phones, they were more than just daily rituals they were our life line, Russ was paddling down a stream, approaching some rapids, and now with out the safety net of technology Russ was humbled in the face of nature, a more powerful force than anything that man had built, by that point in his trek, he had camped out enough to have lost his fear of the wild, but not the respect of it ... Russ discoved that his compass had become unreliable, he found himself walking in circles, with his supplied getting used up and no real knowledge of how to survive in the wild, he found that trouble had found him again,

Episode 46: Truth or Consequences

Russ leans that an old acquaintance has been kidnapped
the road had delivered Russ thru a number of rough patches, and outside Little Rock he found his self at its mercy again, the city itself was over run with scavengers, made traveling the back roads essential, but by nightfall, when they were partying or passed out you were pretty safe ... Russ had stopped shopping in cities, most of them had been completely picked clean, of anything that he would of wanted, but he had become addicted to the word wall, same way he was to his black berry, it was still a mystery who built them, but they caught on fast ... you could usually send a message between neighboring cities in about 24 hours ... this was the first time he had actually seen a message for himself, it was from Ted, Russ backtracked to meet Ted, Ellen had been taken ... they gave Ted two days to being Russ to them or they killed her, Russ tried to explain to Ted about the New World Historians, Ted did not care about protecting the truth, he just wanted his wife back ... Russ promised that he would help get Ellen back, but he had to trust him, and do it his way ... Russ figured that they would kill all of them once they got the memo, so Russ told them that he had hidden it a mile back ... Russ said that he would take them to the memo, but only if they let Ted and Ellen go, Charles took for ever to respond, which is probably while Ted took matters into his own hands, once again, he jumped the one with the gun on Ellen and Ellen started to run, but Charles shot her, Ted trusted Russ, but not the others, he made a choice, as long as Russ held onto that memo he knew that he would be a danger to everyone around him, so he made a choice, he decided to get as far away from other people as possible, no matter what the road had in store

Episode 45: A Good Lie

Russell learns the truth about the Doctor and nurse
mercy is defined as an act of compassion, by the person that has the power to harm, or punish, all the doctor wanted now was to die, to end his pain, but it was not up to him, the Nurse now held that power, and she wanted him to live, she needed him to live, it turned out the doctor did not even know her before The Fall, but she knew him, they were the only two survivors around here with medical experience, so naturally we started working together, the first few weeks, when every one was so scared, they worked night and day but his sickness just got worse and worse, so the Nurse came up with a plan, what choice did she have, she had to keep him alive until he found a cure, it was like clock work, every 47 minutes a little more of him would disappear, Russ knew it was not a coincidence, 47 minutes had come up so many times before, with the Nurse distracted, Ted once again took matters into his own hands, he grabbed the gun, truth was though the nurse did not want to hurt us, she only wanted to save the person she had come to love, something even Ted could relate to, I have failed, just let me go, they tried to tell the other patients the truth, but fear of the virus, had been so ingrained in them, they did not believe that they were not infected, so the Nurse tried a different tact, she told them a good lie, before the Doctor died, he had succeeded, he found a cure, the pills were all the hope those people needed to get on with their lives ... and like them Russ had to get on with his, seeing Ted and Ellen together again, reminded Russ what he was heading for, it also confirmed the saying, trust the road, it always takes you were you need to go, but not necessarily were you want to go, the Historians scouts appear again

Episode 44: Do No Harm

Russ discovers the Doctor is at the center of a deeper mystery
do no harm, thats a promise that Doctors make when they take their oaf, we trust Doctors, because we believe they have our interests at heart ... but what if they don't,the next day Russ showed Ted the letters, he took matters into his own hands, something Russ would come to regret, the Nurse told Ted that she understood his frustration, she did not want to tempt him, not when they were so close ... Ted grabs here by the throat, he wants the truth, pretty soon the whole ICU, was up in arms ... that's when it struck Russ, their were no staff, the whole operation was Nurse Thomas and some Doctor that no one had ever seen in person, stop, we just want to speak with the Doctor, the Doctor is in room 618, Russ and Ted went to the room, they found that the secret formula that they had been applying, actually caused the sores on them, you have every right to be angry spoke the doctor, he was the only one actually manifesting the symptoms, the polarids were pictures of his body, he explained how he had been detereating ever since The Fall ... and the blood transfusions, using our blood samples were the only thing keeping him alive now, those that came to the hospital, with the Doctors blood type were told to stay, and their blood was used to keep the Doctor alive, they were told that they had the virus, just to keep them around, as donors ... the truth is their is no cure, I want you to kill me the Doctor could not bear the pain any longer, the Nurse walks in behind them, with a gun, the Nurse was not ready to let him go, do no harm, those words were no longer a pledge, they were a plea

Epsiode 43: Control Group

Russ begins to manifest symptoms of the virus
Russ would not say that he was a prisoner, because it was a jail of his own making, he had volunteered to be part of a control group ... he could leave anytime he wanted, but what was the point, without a cure to the virus, he was as good as dead ... the other patients were further along than him, the first symptom was itching, then small sores would appear, after that things really got ugly ... there was nothing to do than to use the treatment the doctor prescribed, that and give a blood sample every three hours, the doctor was tracking the progression of the virus, the more data he has, the faster they can beat this thing ... sounds like it might be just a few more days till they beat this thing, that's what they told me, four weeks ago ... Ted Murphy, was a former college football star, a man that was not scared of a fight, so when he learned that he had the virus, he was determined to beat it, but the wait was starting to take it's toll ... after The Fall, Ted refused to change his dreams, he decided to find a girl, get married and raise a couple of line backers, just like he always wanted ... Russ mentioned that he had seen the nurse take a letter for Ted, he went berserk, the nurse explained that it was necessary to remove all outside influences, Ted was not buying it, the nurse said that he was free to leave whenever he wanted to ... Russ started to wonder if a cure was as close as they said, he found the letters, and his suspicions grew, she had been writing to Ted for weeks, begging him to leave the hospital, she wanted them to spend what ever time he had left, together, why keep this from him, unless they needed him to stay, unless they needed all of us to stay

Episode 42: The Virus

Russ learns of a virus that may have caused The Fall
fear is the great motivator, the idea that The Fall could still be happening, was enough for most people to stop and give blood ... according to Nurse Thomas, the Doctor was hoping to find someone with a natural immunity to the virus, soon as the Doctor identify's the correct antigen, the Doctor can make a vaccine, could be any day now ... the nurse was the doctors greatest advocate, said she was lucky enough to have met him before The Fall, he was a world renowned expert on blood born diseases, it was comforting to know that such caring people where trying to save humanity ... they offered every volunteer food and shelter for the night, he wasn't a fan of hospital beds, but he had learnt never to turn down food ... besides those that had stopped to give blood, there were a dozen or so that had already began to manifest the symptoms ... they were getting treatment, but there was a catch, the patients had to remain isolated under controlled conditions, in order to properly monitor their responses, which made it hard if you had friends or family waiting on the outside ... not knowing if you would come out alive, Russ sees the nurse take the letter ... the nurse gives Russ the bad news, his blood tests indicates that he is starting to manifest the virus, the nurse said that he would probably notice symptoms within the next 48 hours ... fear is a motivator, part of him said stay, other parts said run, but what choice did he really have ... staying meant a possible cure, for Russ, his family and the rest of humanity ... the hardest thing to do sometimes, is trust the road

Episode 41: Graceland

In Graceland, Russ runs into an old friend
Russ was figuring that every day could be his last, he found himself doing things he never did before, but always wanted to ... Elvis had always been one of his wife's favorites, he figured he would bring her home a keep sake ... he guessed he should not of been surprised to have been the only visitor there, but was shocked to run into some one from the past ... Russ said he had taken his advise and had tried to help others ... he also told him that he had made some deadly enemies because of his advice, Hey your still kicking, you must be doing something right ... you got to trust the road, it always takes you where you need to go, next day he had already moved on ... at the time Russ did not know what his message about the road, but later it occurred to him that maybe he was meant to take the route he had taken, maybe everything that happened good or bad, happened for a reason ... Russ heard of a Doctor that thought that a flesh eating virus was responsible for the disappearance of the people in The Fall, Russ's first thought was, how could a virus act so quickly ... this doctor and a nurse had set up shop in a local hospital, for several months they had been taken blood samples, looking for a cure, they claimed the virus was still out there ... which meant that everyone that survived had already been exposed, but now this virus was slowly eating away at it's victims ...

Episode 40: The Second Horseman

Russ gets a visitor from his dark past
with the New World Historians hot on his trail the last thing on Russ mind was JD and New Eden ... despite changing his course in Ohio, another horseman had tracked him down, and it wasn't just his life on the line this time ... Russ decided that he had to draw the horseman away from Rose Mansion and Alice ... the key to survival is something Russ learned way back in cub scouts, always be prepared ... but nothing could prepare Russ for what was about to happen, Alice yells out to the horseman, He's here, the Walker ... Russ should of seen the signs, Iris's were the symbol of New Eden, Alice embraced The Fall and rejected technology, just like JD, turned out she was one of his ... the only reason she saved him from the Historians was so she could deliver him to JD, Russ was a demon called The Walker, he had sinned against New Eden ... the horseman is struck down with no visible sign, looked like a heart attack to Russ, Alice was shattered ... Russ gave her a piece of advice, be more careful about who you put your faith in ... Russ finds a box with poison darts in it, he wonders who is protecting him

Episode 39: Temptations

Travis tries to play back the footage to disastrous results
Every temptation has its costs, with Alice Russ figured it was better to take the high road ... Russ new that Alice was a temptation that would be harder to resist the longer he stayed ... Russ dropped in on Travis who was testing his playback machine, the idea was to scan every frame of the video, and project it onto the monitor ... Russ figured that third world countries would be much better equipped for life after an EMP ,.. first world survivors would have to rely on good old fashioned ingenuity ... finally after about 20 minutes, something happened, a picture came up ... and then bang the whole thing went up in a shower of sparks ... Russ went back into the burning room for the tape, a temptation to great to miss ... Travis was confused it looked like another EMP had overloaded his playback machine, but he said that was impossible ... Russ told him about the working satellite he had seen from New Eden, and Arnold's theory about the global network, maybe that network was still active ... Wow that opens up a can of worms, Travis said he was done, proving his spontaneous combustion theory was not worth his life ... he wanted Russ to take the video tape, figured Russ might come across someone with the technology to view it ... Russ saw that Travis was moving on from his quest, when Russ got back to Alice he tried to tell her that it was time for him to move on ... a horseman appears at the window
